SceneOhio: Why and how did you get into
playing?
Vinny
Bricks: Um,
I started out in 1998 doing Live PA's out in Phoenix, Arizona. I did
live performances for about 2 years and basically got sick of dragging
a bunch of gear out, so I started spinning records and starting producing
my own stuff so I basically just put it on dub plates and playing
my own tracks out.
SO:
Why do you spin what you do as
opposed to some other genre?
VB:
It's
just what I evolved into. I started out being into techno and harder
trance, and I just ended up getting into house and techno. It's just
what I feel.
SO:
How long have you been playing?
VB:
I started spinning out about 2 years
ago.
SO:
How come every time I see you,
you look completely different? I never recognize you each time I see
you, but then I get introduced and I'm like, "Oh I know you."
VB:
I
dunno, I kinda have that tendency. When I spin I don't wear any sort
of hat or my glasses and generally when I'm out I'm wearing my hat
and my glasses. I had dread locks for a while but I'm just too white.
SO:
What keeps you going?
VB:
Just
not knowing what else to do. It's just I dunno, it's just something
that I really feel. I don't have anywhere else to go so I keep pushing.
SO:
So other than music what do you
do in your spare time?
VB:
Um, I work on my car.
SO:
Oh aren't you like a car thief
or something? People will post something up and you'll be all, "Amateurs!
They should know that you don't need to knock out the window to break
into this car, blah, blah, blah."
VB: I'm a car nerd. I install automotive security systems for a living
and I learned a lot about car thieves operate and recently had my
car broken into and I've just learned a lot for installing for a living.
SO:
Who's the first artist you ever
saw?
VB:
It
was the Georgia Satellites in 1988 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They
were basically a one-hit wonder, 80's straight up rock band. I saw
them with my grandmother so...
SO:
Do you have any pets?
VB:
We have 2 cats named Parker and Posie.
SO:
What's you favorite track?
VB:
Five mixes I've been listening to in
my car lately: Mistress Barbara's new cd, DJ Dan's Essential Mix from
1999, Anthrax Persistence of Time, DJ Dan's Roundtrip and probably
the Derek Carter Essential Mix.
SO:
Anybody you think we should look
out for music wise?
VB:
I would say uh...probably Ariel, TML
who spins deep house. Those would probably be the main two.
SO:
What are you working on currently?
VB:
Currently I'm working on hopefully doing
a mix cd or three lately. I'd like to do a deep house, a harder house,
and a techno cd. And that's really the main thing. I'm working on
trying to get back into music production and just trying to get back
into the swing of the whole writing thing, so now I'm working with
my partner Cluster Poindexter.
SO:
Oh Cluster Poindexter I got his
cd randomly, at some party.
VB:
Yeah
we both played together at One Love in Cleveland and that's probably
where you got it.
SO:
No I got it at Bubble Bobble.
VB:
We were at that party watching Kevin
Reynolds, who's an old friend of ours.
SO:
See but I don't think he gave
it to me. Like I just randomly got the cd. I got home and his cd was
in my bag. I think somebody slipped it in my bag, did one of you slip
it in my bag without me noticing?!
VB:
Ken
very well might have. He's a sneaky bastard and he likes to give his
cds to everybody. :P
SO:
What do you think or this party
ie: production company, kids, vibe, etc.?
VB:
I
think that this party it was a very good party overall, it had a lot
of potential. A lot of things happened this week that I believe had
a little bit of an impact on it. Overall, Focalpoint they're my crew,
Josh and Beth have been instrumental to my career over the last year
to two years.
SO:
What can you think about the Ohio,
and conversely Midwest scene in general?
VB:
I
think the scene has gone rather downhill over the last few years.
I have to admit I don't get out or around very much outside of the
Cincy, Dayton, Cbus area. I dunno, I'm really hoping that it kinda
picks back up some. They are a lot of really cool kids out in the
scene but it's really hard to get everybody together.
SO:
Any message you want to send out
to the kids, anything else you want us to know?
VB:
Just
keep dancing, keep your mind open, listen to as many different types
of music as possible, and just love one another.
SO:
So are you talking like Free Love
hippie style?
VB:
Yeah
sure.
SO:
Are you a swinger?
VB:
*laughs*
No.
SO:
So why aren't you a swinger?
VB: Too shy.
SO:
Too shy? How can you be too shy?
It's a swinger you just randomly have sex with people you don't have
to talk.
VB:
I'm
just too shy to meet the other swingers I guess *laughs* |
